Thank YOU for Sharing Your Stories

Being asked to speak at an institute for Native American youth this month was a great honor and an unexpectedly moving experience. So, what a pleasure to receive in the mail today these beautiful and touching thank you notes from the participants!

During the session led by Murmur, the group discussed ways students could reach out through traditional and social media channels to share public service announcements and pitch news stories. Students conducted mock interviews and practiced delivering mini-speeches about ways drug use affects their communities.

If there was any doubt that drug use has had a negative impact in their lives, the students’ stories said it all. Each had a personal encounter to share, such as:
- family members struggling to cope with drugs and alcohol addiction
- neighbors’ drug use damaging their health and homes
- destruction and environmental chaos stemming from drug abuse
- talented athletes losing major scholarships following addiction
- friends showing up drunk to sacred events.

We hope the students will continue to share these stories and that their voices will be heard as they work with the media and with schools. If their follow-up to the session is any indication, they are well on their way to making a difference.
